MEDICINE HAT – The Community is rallying behind a couple who lost their business in a fire on Wednesday.

JoDana Tokamp and Dustin Tizzard owned and operated Bamboo Innovations and Deadbolt Construction.

A fire was sparked Thursday night in the city’s light industrial area. An off-duty firefighter spotted the smoke and called 911. Firefighters managed to contain to blaze to the one building, but nearly everything in it was destroyed in the fire.

JoDana said the summer was booked nearly solid with jobs and the fire has put all those projects on hold.

“Right now we have employees that have families that need to have work and we have customers that are waiting for us to come and take care of their projects,” she explained.

“For us, we’re self employed and this is our only income, so if we’re waiting for insurance, we’re waiting with no money coming in for everyone in the company. So, it’s going to be really tough.”

Family and friends of the couple have started a GoFundMe page. The group is hoping to raise funds to buy new tools and equipment for the company to keep people working while they wait for fire officials and the insurance company to complete their investigation.

JoDana said despite the hardship, she and Dustin are thankful for the support.

“There has been a huge amount of people that came out that just want to help us,” she said.

“Thank you,” said Dustin.

There are also plans in the works by other family members and friends, for a community fundraiser.

A dinner and silent auction are being planned for June 15th during Redcliff Days at the Hylton in Redcliff.

Organizer Kandis Mcinnes said tickets should be available for purchase at the Hylton starting on Tuesday.

“We had no idea what impact we really have had on the community and it’s overwhelmingly awesome because it helps us feel like we can do this, we can come back from this,” Jodana said.
