MEDICINE HAT, AB — Calvin Heller could be facing some stiff competition on the tennis court this weekend.

The City Singles Championship gets underway tonight at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club, with matches running until the men’s open final on Sunday.

Heller won the men’s competition last year, and is entering as the number one seed in the men’s open bracket. But his competitors are coming into the year with a shift in their mentality, hoping to knock the defending champion from his throne.

Mitch Frey, who is the second seed in the tournament, has come close to winning before, while Mitch Heller, Calvin’s son, could make the final as a third seed.

Ken Clement, the manager of the Medicine Hat Tennis Club, says there’s a high level of competition among members.

“Competition brings the best out,” he said. “The thing about the tennis club is that nobody gets too bent out of shape about it. It’s fun to compete, but it’s more about testing yourself than anything. You just want to see how you’re going to do this year.”

On the women’s side, a new champion will be crowned, as Erica Miller is not competing this weekend. A total of 10 competitors are taking part on the women’s open bracket.

Action begins tonight. The women’s final is expected to take place on Saturday night, with the men’s championship taking place on Sunday.
