Firefighters battling blaze in light industrial area

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat firefighters are currently on the scene of a structure fire in the city’s light industrial area.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen from the Canalta Centre, and crews are working to extinguish the fire, which is located in the area of 18th Street Southwest.

It is not yet known how many buildings are impacted, or if there are any injuries.

Firefighters posted a live video of their efforts to battle the fire on their Facebook page. It can be viewed below.

8 PM Update

The fire is in a building on 18th street s.w.,across the street from Ecole Electric.  There are several businesses in the area.  A police officer on scene said one of the buildings contained bamboo.

11:45 PM Update

Firefighters say the blaze is now Under control. Crews managed to keep it contained to a single building. That building housed Deadboldt Construction and Bamboo Innovations.

A ladder truck remains on scene dousing hot spots. Crews still have not entered the building due to concerns about its structural integrity.

5:45 AM Update

Fire crews remained on the scene through the night and into Thursday morning, to monitor for possible flare up’s or hotspots.  They are no longer putting water on the building.

Investigators will begin their work looking into the cause when it’s safe to do so.
