MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Judge has handed down a guilty verdict in relation to a drunk driving crash that sent a family to hospital with serious injuries.

Curtis Beisel, 57, has been found guilty on four counts of driving over 0.08 causing bodily harm, and four counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

The verdict was handed down Tuesday, over two years after the crash and following a trial that was spread out over several months.

During the trial the court heard Beisel had been drinking at an establishment in Dunmore on the night of December 17, 2015.

Beisel was driving a Chrysler sedan the wrong way in the westbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway, when it collided with a van carrying a family of four, seriously injuring three people, including an infant that was one week old at the time. The passenger in Beisel’s car also suffered injuries.

He was charged in January 2016 in connection with the collision.

A blood expert testified Beisel’s blood alcohol level registered at 173mg/100ml of blood. That’s equivalent to .173 BAC, more than double the legal limit of .08 BAC.

Beisel’s defence lawyer has requested a pre-sentencing report. He’s scheduled to return to provincial court for sentencing on August 8th, 2018.
