MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s going to be a sprint to the finish at the Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club entering the final round of the 2018 Victoria Day Classic Tournament.

Sunday was moving day at the tournament, with the final foursomes being determined in the three divisions hunting for the open championship.

Mike Valk led the charge in the men’s division on Sunday, as he was the only golfer to shoot under par to post a 71 for the second consecutive day.

That’s moved the 2016 MHGCC men’s champion into first place, with Dillon Batsel dropping one shot back to second at one under par after firing a 74.

Joining Valk and Batsel in the final group will be last year’s winner in Ryan Werre and Dallas Bassen, who are six and eight shots back of Valk, respectively.

Becky Martin continued to widen her lead on the field in the women’s championship flight, shooting a 77 to finish at eight over par.

Pending a monumental collapse, Martin will capture her second straight Victoria Day Classic championship as she sits 20 shots up on both Stephania Duffee and Jean Nitchke for top spot.

A tighter grouping in the senior men’s division however, with just two shots separating the top three golfers on the leader board.

Gary Kavanaugh wasn’t able to replicate his first round performance of 71 as he shot an 82 on Sunday, but he still sits in top spot at nine over par.

The gap has closed on Kavanaugh however, with Kelly Risling firing a 75 to pull within one stroke of the leader at 10 over.

Sitting one stroke behind Risling is Carl Vaters, who also shot a score of 75 on Sunday to put himself in the final championship flight.

The 63rd Victoria Day Classic championships will be awarded on Monday, as the senior men will hit the course in the morning before a 1:30 pm shotgun start kicks off the final round for the men and women’s brackets.
