CALGARY, AB – No medals this time around for two Medicine Hat judo competitors, but a great learning experience at the 2018 Canadian Open Judo Championships.

Local Ethan Cobbe-Hoggan advanced to the U18 men’s 90 kilogram division bronze medal match, but ultimately fell to Quebec’s Justin Colombe to finish just off the podium in fourth.

Earlier this year, Cobbe-Hoggan won a bronze medal at the Edmonton International Judo Championships.

Medicine Hat’s other competitor Kayen Ivey meanwhile, lost both of his matches in the U18 men’s 73 kilogram division to Carter Veenendaal from B.C. and Guillaume Gaulin from Quebec.

According to Medicine Hat Judo Club coach Donovan Hoggan, Ivey fought well with his ground game but wasn’t able to hold off his opponents standing up.

The unofficial end to the judo season for many local athletes, the Medicine Hat Judo Club will begin practicing again in the fall.
