LETHBRIDGE, AB – An up and down day at the ballpark for the Medicine Hat K of C ‘A’ Knights on Saturday at the Ron Matthews Memorial Tournament down the road in Lethbridge.

Medicine Hat was victorious 11-0 over the Gravelbourg Bulls out of Saskatchewan, before falling 12-5 to the Vauxhall Spurs.

In their first game against Gravelbourg, Medicine Hat racked up six runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 lead in a game that lasted just five innings.

Kayden Berndt was 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs for the Knights against Gravelbourg, while Jaden Schwindt pitched a full five innings to earn the win with 10 strikeouts.

The Knights endured a late collapse in their second game of the day however, after building up a 5-1 lead over Vauxhall after the fourth inning.

Vauxhall scored a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 5-5, before unloading with seven runs in the seventh to stun the Knights.

Pitching wasn’t as sharp for Medicine Hat against the Spurs allowing 13 hits, while the Knights bats were only able to pick up five hits themselves.

Connor Drever was the only Knight to register more than one hit as he got on-base twice with an RBI, while Berndt, Drew Niwa, and Reese Whelen also drove in runs.

Starter Heydon Harrison went five and one-third innings with just one earned run allowed on five hits and a trio of strikeouts.

However, it was Cole Rath credited with the loss after allowing five earned runs over one and two-thirds innings of work.

The Knights finish up their season-opening tournament in Lethbridge on Sunday, starting with a game against the Fort Macleod Royals at 12:00 pm.

As for the ‘AA’ Moose Monarchs, they take on the Great Falls Chargers at 1:00 pm in their final game of the Vauxhall Academy Invitational Tournament on Sunday.
