MEDICINE HAT, AB — A prestigious $80,000 scholarship is helping one student at Crescent Heights High School follow her dreams of one day working for the Canadian Space Agency.

Anoushka Gaekwad is finishing up her last year of high school and said graduation is only three weeks away.

Gaekwad said Anthony Donner, a guidance counsellor at the school, nominated her for the Schulich Leader scholarship, which are granted to graduates who enrol in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics program at participating universities in Canada and Israel.

The grade 12 student has big plans for her future and is already enrolled in the biochemistry program at the University of Alberta.

Gaekwad said she enjoys math and science and the program will help her keep her options open.

“[In math,] there’s a way to solve a specific question and, like, science is basically like a mystery and it’s evolving all the time,” she said. “Every day is changing and there’s something new to learn about and that’s what really fascinates me.”

Gaekwad said her goal is to become a researcher in environmental studies and said this scholarship will help pay for books and housing over the next four years.
