Firefighters dive into recertification training

MEDICINE HAT – Local firefighters have been seen diving into ponds across the city and Friday they waded into the South Saskatchewan River.

Members of the dive team are currently undergoing their recertification process.

It includes dives in static water, like ponds, a simulated ice diving course and going under on moving water like the river.

Captain Scott Berg said the river tends to be muddy and murky no matter what time of year they dive in it. He said the training prepares them for situations where they can’t see and have to rely on their sense of touch.

“Part of the certification process is black water operations, so we’re taught to dive without the ability to see,” Berge explained. “The way our gear is set up and how it’s located on a diver is 100 per cent predictable.”

There are around 30 firefighters taking part in the process.

So far this year officials say they haven’t had to put their training to use. There have been a few calls about kids or youth playing near ice earlier in the year, but there were no calls about anyone falling through the ice or into the river.

The recertification process happens every three years, but firefighters do dive training exercises on an annual basis.

“It’s incredibly important so we keep out people safe,” said Berg.
