HILDA, AB. – Ranchers who were affected but the October wild fires are invited to a workshop and monitoring program information session at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilda Community Centre.

Dr. Cameron Carlyle with the University of Alberta is looking to recruit ranchers to monitor the land and see how it recovers from the fire.

“Information in terms of how pastures are performing and recovering,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of information of how grasslands in this part of Alberta and Saskatchewan recover from these fires.”

Carlyle said anyone is invited to attend the session, but he hopes to share more information with landowners of burnt grassland in particular.

“The largest recommendation moving forward is to differ grazing cattle on effected areas for at least the next year,” he said. “In the longer term keeping track of how the land is recovering in terms of forage recovery and of a litter layer.”

Carlyle explained the litter layer is a layer of dead plant material on the surface of the soil.

“That’s really important in this part of Alberta for plant production,” he said. “It holds moisture in the soil.”
