MEDICINE HAT, AB —A Medicine Hat man charged with first-degree murder in connection with a 2017 homicide made a brief appearance on Thursday.

Robert Hoefman, 56, appeared via CCTV in Medicine Hat provincial court. He was charged with first degree murder in January in connection with the death of James Satre.

Satre, 64, was found dead at the intersection of Mill Street Southeast and Smelter Avenue Southeast on October 11.

Hoefman was arrested and charged with one count of extortion in November before the first-degree murder charge was laid. A publication ban on the identity of the complainant on the extortion charge remains in effect.

Police believe the extortion and the murder are connected.

During the appearance, Hoefman’s lawyer informed the judge they received additional disclosure on the case, and need time to go through it. The lawyer asked for a one week adjournment to May 17, where he is hoping to set a date for a preliminary hearing.

Hoefman remains in custody.
