MEDICINE HAT, AB — One of the most popular attractions in the city is getting a significant makeover this summer.

Crews have been hard at work at the Police Point Park Interpretive Centre since April, working on an upgrade project first announced last year.

“So far, we’ve poured the foundation for the building addition, where we’re building a new storage room,” said Scott Woodside, project manager with the City of Medicine Hat. “We’ve taken over the old storage room, where we’re getting some plumbing in place for the barrier-free washroom.”

The centre hasn’t had significant work since it first opened 36 years ago.

“The building is getting quite a face lift,” said Woodside. “Nothing major has been done to the building since it was built in 1982.

“We’re going to be doing new siding, new windows, new doors, some new paint on the inside, new floor tile. It’s going to look like a completely new building.”

The budget for the project is $935,000, with $200,000 in funding coming from the city. The rest of the funding for the project came from donations from South Country Co-op, The Medicine Hat Accommodation Association, the Community Facility Enhancement Program and the federal government’s Enabling Accessibility Fund.

The centre and the park will remain open while the construction is ongoing. The city is hoping to have the work finished by the fall.
