MEDICINE HAT, AB — A community mailbox which was left open on Wednesday in the Crestwood neighbourhood has prompted an apology from Canada Post.

Medicine Hat resident Jackie McNab sent CHAT TV a photo that was taken of a community mailbox on 17th Street SE with both of its doors open Wednesday afternoon.

McNab said the mailbox was not the one she used.

When she went to work at 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning, she saw the doors had been closed.

CHAT News reached out to Canada Post for an explanation, and received a statement in response.

“This incident is unacceptable. We apologize to our customers and are following up internally to make sure this will not be repeated,” the statement reads.

“The community mailbox was not properly secured yesterday when the delivery agent attended the site around 4:15 p.m. A customer brought it to our attention around 5 pm and a supervisor visited the site immediately to secure it.”

Canada Post says residents who notice an open community mailbox can call the company at 1-800-267-1177.
