MEDICINE HAT, AB — Western Hockey League teams will be on the clock on Thursday.

The WHL Bantam Draft gets underway Thursday morning in Red Deer. Edmonton has the first overall pick, while the Medicine Hat Tigers are slotted in the 11th position.

“I think there’s lots of good players every year,” said Shaun Clouston, head coach and general manager for the Tigers. “Carter (Sears, director of player personnel) and our scouts have done a tremendous job, and I think that they’re very, very well prepared heading into this draft.”

Clouston says the team’s mindset when on the clock will remain the same as it has been in previous years.

“Our philosophy has always been, and obviously in some years we’ve done better than others, but it’s been to draft the best player,” he said.

“When we get to our pick, we’ll pick the player that we believe is the player that will be able to make the biggest impact on our hockey club moving forward.”

Last year, goaltender Garin Bjorklund was drafted by the Tigers 21st overall in the first round. The team selected 13 players during the draft.

This year’s draft gets underway at 8:30 a.m.
