MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The 39th annual Rattler Run at Medicine Hat College saw almost 700 runners taking part in 3km, 5km and 10km races.

Organizer Tara Chisholm said the event was a huge success with new and old faces coming out to part take.

“We have a lot of racers that we see every year,” she said. “We have new families or people which come and try it out for the first time, which is cool.”

Chisholm said the race was down in numbers this year compared to last, with 800 participants taking part in 2017.

“The sun really didn’t start to come out until the last week,” she said. “I think people really didn’t believe it was going to be nice out for the run.”

With temperatures reaching +24 degrees Celsius during race time, Chisholm said it was the warmest race day they’ve had in the last five years. She explained it was easier for runners to overheat if they aren’t taking in enough water.

“We encourage our runners to drink a lot of water before hand,” she said. “We have water stations set up throughout the race to get some water when they need it.”

Chisholm explained the race had a variety of runners ranging from beginner to advanced, with the youngest participant being just three years old.

“We do have some excellent racers which are apart of this run,” she said. “People cheer them in, it’s really cool to see.”

Along with runners, Chisholm said the route is set up to accommodate any athlete who wish to participate

“We also had a wheel chair racer out today,” she said. “We had people of all abilities coming out to enjoy the sun today.”
