MEDICINE HAT, AB — The top badminton players in Southern Alberta are looking to book a ticket to provincials this weekend.

The South Zone Badminton Championships got underway in Lethbridge, with 24 athletes from the Medicine Hat High School Mohawks all competing for a provincial berth.

“They’ve been putting in a ton of work,” said Dakota Mattson, head coach of the Mohawks badminton team. “The last couple of days, we’ve really just been focused on where they think they need to improve their game the most, so we’ve been doing a lot of individual drills, everyone’s kind of working on their own thing.

“I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m pretty confident Hat High will have some sort of representation at provincials.”

Sam Nygaard, a Grade 12 student, competes in doubles with his partner Tony Nguyen. The pair missed out on provincials last year, and Nygaard says taking part in provincials would be a great way to cap his high school career.

“We finished third last year at Zones, so we were quite upset because we missed provincials by one spot,” he said, noting he and Nguyen have practised hard since last year to get ready for provincials.

Provincials take place May 4-5 in Grimshaw.
