MEDICINE HAT, AB — One of the two men charged in connection with the death of a Medicine Hat man last year pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Luke Boxell appeared in the Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench Tuesday morning, where he entered a guilty plea to one charge of manslaughter in relation to the death of Jordan Pede.

He was sentenced to 10 years behind bars, a sentence recommended by both the Crown and defence.

Pede, 24, was found injured in Strathcona Island Park on New Year’s Eve 2016, according to police. He died 11 days later in Calgary hospital.

Boxell, 22 ,along with a co-accused, were arrested and charged with second-degree murder last year.

A publication ban is in effect to keep the facts of the case from being published. The crown argues the information should be withheld to protect the jury pool for the co-accused’s trial, which begins January 7 in Medicine Hat.
