Overland flooding impacting residents south of the border

HAVRE, MT — Residents in Havre, Montana, saw record amounts of snowfall this year, more than three feet higher than average.

The snow has started to melt and now the concern is around the water it’s leaving behind.

Josh Miller, a trained storm spotter with the National Weather Service, said the warmer weather has helped dry up some of the overland flooding the area saw last week, but he knows more is on the way.

The snowpack in the Cypress Hills is expected to impact Montana in the coming weeks.

“I think, for the most part, it seems like we were well prepared for this,” he said over the phone. “The response on the county and state level was really good. I think we could still see some flooding from the higher elevations with the snow melt there and also with any precipitation that comes, so it’s just being ready for that and taking it as it comes.”

Miller said precipitation could also play a role in the overland and Milk River flooding but adds they’re not expecting any rain in the short term forecast.
