County of 40 Mile warns about the dangers of water on roads

COUNTY OF 40 MILE, AB — County officials say water is now threatening a lift station in Burdett.

Since Wednesday night, officials have closed three more roads.

In total, 70 roadways have been barricaded off since the weekend but Stewart Payne, director of emergency management said there are “many more” which have water running over top of them.

Staff have been working around the clock, monitoring where the water is, where it’s heading and the damage it has already caused.

Payne said right now it’s critical that no one drive through any water which may be on the roads and that no one move any barriers.

“A lot of people don’t have fear of driving around barricades but when they do, they’re taking that risk and if they move them, they’re adding that risk to other travellers coming along the road,” Payne said over the phone from Foremost. “We have had our county operations staff reporting that barricades and flags that they’ve placed have been relocated.”

Payne added that while the calls to the county office have slowed, they’re expecting warm weather in the forecast which will melt the snow they still have left.
