Sun Devils looking to rebound with returning players in 2018

MEDICINE HAT, AB – After a disappointing 2017 campaign, the Medicine Hat Sun Devils lacrosse team is ready to write a new story this year.

With the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League season on the horizon, the Sun Devils held their final practice before the regular season on Thursday night.

Speed and quickness will be staples of the Sun Devils this year with a smaller roster, not only in height but in overall size as well.

Only 17 athletes dot Medicine Hat’s roster this year, seven fewer compared to last year’s team.

However, there will be more of a veteran presence in 2018 with 13 players returning after suiting up for last year’s squad that missed the playoffs with a 6-12 record.

They’ll be led by Damon Phillips who replaces Kennan Wilson as captain, and he said it’s something he takes very seriously.

“It’s an honour to be captain, especially with such a great group of guys,” said Phillips. “Hopefully I can lead them deep into the playoffs and the championship is where we’re going.”

Aidan McLean will be relied upon to provide much of the offence, leading the team with 22 goals and 40 points in just 16 games as a 17-year-old.

Head coach Chris Loran is entering his second year behind the Sun Devils bench and said with so many returning players, he’s expecting a return to the post-season in 2018.

“Just having the experience of playing for one year, we had quite a few first time players in the junior division,” said Loran. “So, having that one year under their belt gives them the confidence to start playing a little bit more aggressively.”

Medicine Hat will be facing a new team in their division this year, as the Calgary Sabrecats have come into the fold.

Phillips said they’re preparing as best they can for a team they don’t have any film on.

“We’re playing a new team to the league this year, so we don’t know what we’re going to expect or anything like that,” he said. “But that being said, we have the same core but we’re missing a lot of different guys. So, hopefully we’ll come out playing hard.”

Medicine Hat opens their season on the road Saturday night facing off against the Calgary Axemen, and will be back at Stu Peppard Arena on Sunday to wind up the weekend against the newly formed Sabrecats.

The Sun Devils hold their home opener on April 21 at the Kinplex when they welcome the Olds Stingers to town.
