FUNERALS CONTINUE FOR HUMBOLDT CRASH VICTIMS

Family and friends will gather today for the funerals of three of the 16 people who died as a result of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team bus crash. Jacob Leicht, who was 19, is to be laid to rest in his home city of Humboldt, Sask. The funeral for Adam Herold, who was 16 and youngest member of the team, will be held in Montmartre, neat Regina. And the service for team bus driver Glen Doerksen, who was 59, is set for Carrot River, Sask.

TRUDEAU ARRIVES IN PERU FOR AMERICAS SUMMIT

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Peru for the first stop of a 10-day foreign tour that will also taken him to Paris and the United Kingdom for the Commonwealth summit. But he will return to Ottawa after the Summit of the Americas in Lima to meet Sunday with the premiers of Alberta and B.C. to discuss their differences over the $7.4 billion Trans Mountain pipeline expansion. Trudeau will head to France on Monday.

TIM HORTONS’ PARENT COMPANY UNDER SCRUTINY

The federal government says it’s looking into concerns by some Tim Hortons franchisees about the terms Ottawa placed on a deal that saw their parent company taken over by a Brazilian firm in 2014. It’s the latest move in an ongoing dispute between franchisees and Restaurant Brands International. The claim RBI is cutting costs and squeezing restaurant profits, most recently by refusing to raise prices to help them cope with Ontario’s minimum wage hike.

ONLINE CANADIAN PHARMACY EXPECTED TO BE FINED TODAY IN U.S.

An online pharmacy that bills itself as Canada’s largest is expected to be fined US$34 million in Montana today for importing counterfeit cancer drugs and other unapproved drugs into the United States. Canada Drugs has filled millions of prescriptions by offering itself as a safe choice for patients to save money on expensive drugs. But U.S. prosecutors say Canada Drugs’ business model is based entirely on illegally importing unapproved and misbranded drugs.

VICTORIA POLICE OFFICER DIES 30 YEARS AFTER CRASH

A funeral with full police honours is being planned for Victoria police Const. Ian Jordan. He died in hospital on Wednesday after spending 30 years in a coma due to the injuries he suffered when his cruiser crashed into another police vehicle racing towards same call. Jordan was 35 at the time of the accident. Hilary Jordan says she is happy that her husband’s ordeal is over and he’ll be at peace.
