MEDICINE HAT, AB — The trial for a Medicine Hat woman charged with murder in connection with the death of husband in 2016 is getting underway today.

Barbara Holmes, 53, will appear in the Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench this morning for the first day of her trial. She is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of John Holmes, 51.

Barbara has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police were called to a dispute at a home on Robinson Drive on June 18, 2016.

John was found inside the home suffering from serious injuries. He was transported to hospital, but later died from his injuries.

Barbara was ordered to stand trial following a preliminary hearing last year. Details from the hearing are under a publication ban.

She has remained in custody since her arrest.

The trial is scheduled to run from April 9-20.
