Police warn of tax return fraud in the city

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service is reminding businesses to remain vigilant after a tax fraud has been spotted in the city.
Police say the fraud involves individuals presenting falsified T4 documents and employment records in an effort to obtain a tax refund.
The fraud sees individuals attending tax refund businesses and presenting a manufactured T4 document. The document typically contains a company name which is fake on not operating, and therefore does not contribute to CPP or EI. The employee tax contributions are artificially inflated and it appears the individual is entitled to a tax refund.
The fraud has been reported by offices in Medicine Hat as well as in other cities across Canada.
