Kamara lifts Whitecaps to 2-1 win over Crew

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kei Kamara scored the go-ahead goal on a diving header in the 78th minute and the Vancouver Whitecaps came from behind to beat the Columbus Crew 2-1 on Saturday.

Vancouver trailed at the break before scoring twice in the second half, including Brek Shea’s tying goal in the 51st minute.

“All the credit to the players because at halftime when I gave them a little poke they responded,” said Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson.

Gyasi Zardes pounced on a rebound in the 29th minute to open the scoring for the Crew (3-1-1), who had their four-game unbeaten streak snapped.

But Shea smashed home a deflection off Crew goalkeeper Zack Steffen to tie it for Vancouver (3-1-1).

“Happy with the three points… (I) thought the game plan was excellent and the boys carried out what I asked them to and put a lot of effort in,” said Robinson.

Artur had a header hit the crossbar in the 86th minute that would have tied it for Columbus.

Robinson made five changes from the previous weekend’s match against the L.A. Galaxy.

Captain Kendall Waston returned from international duty, coming in for Aaron Maund, while Bernie Ibini, Jordan Mutch, Russell Teibert, and Shea stepped in for Cristian Techera, Yordy Reyna, Efraín Juarez, and Alphonso Davies.

The Whitecaps’ next match is Saturday on the road against Real Salt Lake.
