MEDICINE HAT, AB — A cryptocurrency mining company coming to Medicine Hat later this year will officially have a new CEO this weekend.

Hut 8 Mining Corp. Has announced Andrew Kiguel will be taking over as president and CEO of the company beginning on Saturday.

“Mr. Kiguel brings with him more than 20 years of capital markets experience along with a deep knowledge of the blockchain industry,” a statement from the company reads. “We look forward to his leadership as we continue to grow our operations in Canada and establish Hut 8 as the leader in North American mining.”

As a result of the appointment, Sean Clark, who was serving as the interim CEO, will step down, and serve Hut 8 in an advisory role.

Kiguel joins the company from GMP Securities LP, where he spent more than 18 years. At GMP, he was most recently managing director of investment banking, and was a key member of GMP’s blockchain investing group.

The city and Hut 8 announced earlier this month they agreed to a 10-year deal to set up a bitcoin mining operation in the city. The facility is set to open this fall.
