MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Alberta Marlin Aquatic Club (AMAC) are celebrating a successful showing at a competition in Edmonton.

The local club came home with the Swim Alberta Small Team Banner at the Spring Championships earlier this month, which head coach Jordan Harper says means they had a lot of swimmers who had strong finishes at the event.

“We had a lot of good swims,” said Harper. “We had some medal places from the Maxwell brothers, some top place finishes from just about everyone, and second swims from just about everyone.”

Parker and Munro Maxwell both came home with bronze medals. Munro finished third in in the 400 metre freestyle, and Parker finished third in the 200 metre

The club also saw Delrae Vetter qualify for the Canadian Junior Nationals in the 800 metre freestyle event, which will be held in Winnipeg in July.

“During the swim, it was really tiring, and I was trying not to give up and just pushing through it, ‘cause i knew i was able to do it,” said Vetter, 13. “When I touched the wall, and realized I got the time, it was, like, relief, because I’ve been working at it since last summer to try and get it.”

It’s the first time Vetter has qualified for the event in her six years of swimming with AMAC, and says the win this weekend has increased her confidence.

“I’m definitely a lot more confident that I know that I can do it and it’s not so far out there,” she said.

Vetter, along with fellow teammates Berlin Mastel and Emily Schlenker, have also qualified for the Canadian Westerns, which run from April 13-16 in Victoria.
