Medicine Hat receives funding for projects in budget

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Several projects for Medicine Hat will be funded in the coming fiscal year, according to Budget 2018.

The Medicine Hat Regional Hospital is receiving $13 million in 2018-19 , followed by $11 million in 2019-2020, and $8 million in 2020-2021, for a total of $32 million.

The funding will be used for the second phase of the hospital redevelopment. According to the Ministry of Health, the second phase will involve an extensive interior renovation to the existing hospital, and will increase the emergency department to almost triple its current size.

The funding will be used to support the renovation to the emergency department, and areas impacted by the work, including diagnostic imaging, health information, bio medical engineering and the Health Foundation.

Medicine Hat College is set to receive funding first announced in the 2017 budget. A total of $4 million has been set aside for development of the college’s east campus. The Ministry of Advanced Education announced the tuition freeze on post-secondary students has been extended for the fourth straight year.

Medicine Hat will also benefit from funding for affordable housing. The budget has earmarked $50 million for nine affordable housing projects to benefit seniors, at-risk youth, and homeless or low-income individuals and families. Details about the program are expected to be announced at a later date.
