MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission is now allowing hair salons, spas and barbershops to apply for a liquor licence.

Kirsten Spec of Couture Hair Lounge said she is looking forward to being able to apply for a licence for her salon.

“I think people are excited,” she said. “It’s a different option on a service, you can come in, get your hair done and relax.”

Spec said being able to offer wine, beer or other liquor gives customers a unique experience.

“Definitely hoping to be able to offer champagne and mimosa’s on wedding days,” she said. “Also doing some men’s nights partnering with local beers.”

Michelle Hynes-Dawson with Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission said they had a number of requests from the beauty service industry to be able to offer liquor to their customers and they are meeting the demands.

“This isn’t a blanket approval that every salon, spa or barbershop can offer liquor service,” she said. “It does require a class B Licence.”

Hynes-Dawson said all Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission rules must be followed including offering a light meal or snack and anyone under the age of 25 has to have photo identification checked.

“Anybody serving alcohol must take our mandatory ProServe training certification,” she said. “That’s understanding what the laws are and the policies, we well as responsible (alcohol) service.”

Spek is already working on developing policies in her salon to ensure liquor consumption by customers is kept to a minimum.

“I would have a drink limit or a drink maximum that would eliminate the worry of people getting out of hand,” she said.
