MEDICINE HAT, AB — Students at Medicine Hat College took the time to help out the city’s homeless on Wednesday.

A group of students in the administrative office professional program at the college hosted a fundraiser Wednesday morning and afternoon, with all donations and proceeds benefiting the Champion Centre.

“As part of our program, we were tasked with doing a critical thinking project in which we had to help within the community,” said Cheri Bates, one of the students involved with organizing the fundraiser.

Bates said the group, which also consisted of fellow students Carli Curtis, Haileigh Tait and Courtney Ketchmark, researched groups who assist with homeless people in the city, and met with the Champion Centre prior to starting the fundraiser.

She said the programs that the centre is involved with made the decision easy for them.

“We like the Champion Centre because they provide a breakfast 365 days of the year, and we thought that was a pretty incredible thing to do for people with our community,” she said.

The group collected donations for a 50/50 raffle and also collected items such as clothing, soap, toothpaste and food for the organization.

Bates has said working on the project has made her and the group want to volunteer with the Champion Centre.

By the end of the fundraiser, the group had raised $180 for the Champion Centre and also collected several donations of clothes and food.

The Champion Centre accepts donations online on their website or in person at their location on North Railway Street from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
