MEDICINE HAT, AB — Fentanyl and carfentanil are believed to be in a potent batch of drugs, working its way through Lethbridge and the Blood Tribe.

Numerous overdoses have been reported in over the last week and the numbers continue to grow.

Despite the concern, Medicine Hat police don’t believe the drugs will make their way here.

Inspector Tim McGough said while officers do seize fentanyl and carfentanil in Medicine Hat, it’s not common to see drugs from a smaller city, like Lethbridge, here.

“Typically the products that we seize usually come from areas of Calgary or further afield in Calgary,” he said. “There’s not a lot of sharing of drugs between Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.”

McGough adds while it’s not common, it’s not unheard of.

He went on to say that Project Arbour could have an impact locally.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team released details about the organized crime group out of Calgary on Thursday.

Suspected fentanyl powder was seized, along with methamphetamine, heroin and numerous other drugs.

McGough said those drugs could have made there way to Medicine Hat.

“A lot of the drugs that they seized were destined to southern Alberta,” he said. “So, yes, I would speculate that that will have an impact, or has had an impact, on some of the types of drugs that were seized coming to this community.
