Nobleford becomes Alberta’s newest town

NOBLEFORD, AB — The province has officially declared Nobleford Alberta’s newest town.

The village northwest of Lethbridge was granted town status by an order-in-council signed by Lt. Gov. Lois Mitchell, effective Feb. 28, as the community celebrated its 100th birthday.

“Your community has much to be proud of through its 100-year history, and the future looks very bright for the Town of Nobleford,” Municipal Affairs minister Shaye Anderson said in an attached letter. The community also received centennial greetings from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Premier Rachel Notley, and Lethbridge Mayor Chris Spearman.

Mayor Don McDowell said in a January interview that while the change in status from village to town is largely ceremonial, he hoped it would help spur economic development. The community reached the needed population milestone of 1,000 in the 2011 census, and by 2016 it was 1,278.
