MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat U-16A Girls Ringette team have their eyes on a provincial title this weekend in Leduc.

After a successful season where the Mission finished 11-3-2, the girls are confident heading into the 2018 Alberta Provincial Championships. Head coach Marty Robinson thinks the girls have a good shot at taking home the gold.

“We’ve got pretty high expectations, this team is probably ranked number one or two in the province right now so we’re looking forward to a solid turnout,” Robinson says.

Goaltender Mikaela Claypool says she’s excited to compete among the best teams in the province this weekend.

“We’ve been looking forward to this since two years ago when we were last together,” Claypool says. “I think it will be a good challenge for us and we’ll be able to play all the teams across Alberta so it will be good to show our stuff and show what we can do.”

Gold in Leduc isn’t all the girls are after, with a berth at the Western Canadian Ringette Championships on the line. Kennedy Lanigan thinks the girls have what it takes.

“Oh I think we’re all excited, I think we’re ready to win Provincials and go to Westerns,” Lanigan says.

Playing together has helped form a strong bond within the team, something assistant coach Loralee Eastland has seen first-hand.

“They’ve played together a few years now, I think they’re beginning to understand each other and the coaching systems we’re trying to run and that’s been really helpful,” Eastland says.

The girls practice once more this Thursday before heading off to Leduc. The tournament runs March 2nd to March 4th.
