Case adjourned for basketball player facing assault with a weapon charge

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A former member of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers charged with assault with a weapon had his case adjourned once again.

Collin Ralko, 22, appeared briefly in Medicine Hat provincial court on Monday, where his matter was adjourned until March 5.

Ralko, along with teammate Kieron Burgess, was arrested on November 25 and charged with assault with a weapon.

The pair were alleged to have fired an airsoft gun from a moving vehicle in the 400 block of North Railway Street, causing minor injuries to a bystander.

Following the incident, both players were suspended from the team.

Burgess pleaded guilty and received an absolute discharge on Feb. 1 . The absolute discharge is granted by the court “if it considers it to be in the best interests of the accused and not contrary to the public interest,” according to the Criminal Code of Canada. It means no conviction is registered, but the discharge will stay on the criminal record for one year before being expunged.

Ralko returns to provincial court on March 5.
