WOOD BUFFALO, AB — Dozens of athletes from Medicine Hat and the surrounding area are heading up to Wood Buffalo to put their skills to the test.

The 2018 Alberta Winter Games gets underway Friday and lasts until Monday. More than 40 athletes from Medicine Hat and the surrounding area will be representing Zone 1, aiming to win medals during the weekend-long event.

Medicine Hat makes up the majority of the Zone 1 ringette team, with 17 players listing the Gas City as their hometown. Two players call Schuler home (Ariana Herman and Sheridyn Herman), while one player, Lorelai Koch, is from Diamond City, and Emily Miller is from Lethbridge.

Nine wrestlers from Medicine Hat are going to the tournament, including Baille McNaughton, who was selected to carry the Zone 1 flag in at the Opening Ceremonies.

Other local athletes taking part include speed skater Ethan Jacobson, volleyball players Mia Kelly, Ethan Pitman and Craig Schults, snowboarders Jasmine Acton and Kobe Willis and judokas Kayen Ivey, Emmanuel Cooper and Ethan Cobbe-Hoggan.

Medicine Hat hockey players Elias Eisenbarth and Dawson Seitz will be suiting up for Zone 2 during the games, rather than Zone 1, which covers their hometown.
