Medicine Hat Police dealing with “high risk situation”

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Police say they are responding to what they call a “high risk situation” in the area of Cuyler Road SE.

Residents are being asked to avoid the area – vehicle and pedestrian traffic has been blocked off, and police say the area is restricted to officers only.

Police say they cannot provide further updates until they have finished responding to the incident.

UPDATE 10:30 A.M.

Police Service remain on scene of a high-risk situation in the area of Cuyler Road SE. The area remains closed to the public and is restricted to police personnel only at this time.

An emergency shelter has been established at the Patterson Armoury, located at 120 Cuyler Road SE for any residents temporarily displaced by the closure of the area.

Residents who have been directly contacted by police, and advised to shelter in place, are asked to remain in their current location.

UPDATE 11:30 A.M.

Police say the situation on Cuyler Road has been resolved. A man is in custody facing several charges.

Nicole, a resident who lives across street from where the situation unfolded, told CHAT News she was woken up this morning around 3 a.m by a loud speaker. Throughout the morning she said heard a series of loud pops and the sound of broken windows. Officers told her to stay in the basement of her home, along with her 3 children, while the incident continued. 

Nicole also reported seeing smoke coming out of the house, and a man exiting the house moments later. 

UPDATE 2 P.M.

A situation that began around  2:30 this morning on Cuyler Road s.e. – ended with the arrest of a man about 8 hours later.
 
Police initially went to the home to arrest a man accused of criminal harassment and uttering threats towards a female victim.  They were met by a man with a firearm, making threats.
 
Police closed the road and residents were told to stay in their basements –  those who were unable to go home were sheltered at the Patterson armoury.
 
Some people in the neighborhood said they were awakened by a police loudspeaker  – and heard a series of loud pops during the incident.
 
It  ended after police used tear gas at which time the suspect came out and was arrested without incident.

The 38 year old male is facing charges that include criminal harassment, uttering threats and numerous firearm related offences.

The Major Crimes unit continues to investigate.
