MEDICINE HAT, AB – The stage is set at the Medicine Hat Curling Club with the first provincial qualifying games at the Alberta U18 Southern Playdowns getting underway on Saturday afternoon.

In the men’s tournament, Calgary’s Cole Ector rink edged out the Jacob Libbus rink from Black Diamond 5-3 in the ‘A’ bracket semi-finals on Saturday morning to advance to the ‘A’ finals.

There the Ector rink will battle the Desmond Young rink from Airdrie and Banff, who have rolled through their opening games with 10-2 and 9-3 victories, respectively.

That 9-3 win for Young came on Saturday as well, beating the local rink of Connor Zeidell and forcing Zeidell to play in the ‘B’ bracket.

The winner will clinch one of three spots at provincials, with the loser falling to the ‘B’ bracket as well.

As for the women’s bonspiel, the final in the ‘A’ bracket has also been set between Calgary’s Elysa Crough rink and Red Deer’s Hollie Vincent rink.

Crough and her team scored a pair in both the first and fourth ends on Saturday, picking up a 6-1 win over the Zoe Cinnamon rink from Cochrane to advance.

As for Vincent, she squeaked out a 5-4 win over the Subasthika Thangadurai rink from Calgary to book her spot in the ‘A’ finals.

Both ‘A’ finals will be held at 2:00 pm at the Medicine Hat Curling Club.
