Crunch time for Cubs

Feb 9, 2018 | 2:00 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – It’s the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs last chance to make a push in the standings this weekend.

The Cubs are free falling with eight losses in their last nine games.

It’s been a tough late season stretch for the Cubs, who haven’t won in regulation in 2018. Medicine Hat still has their fate in their own hands with two games left. They are one point back of fifth-place Strathmore, who have one game in hand.

All six teams are guaranteed playoff hockey in the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s South Division. Banff’s return to the league next year will shift the playoff format back to the regular ‘last place is out’ system. The first and second place teams earn a first round bye, while the third place club squares off against last place and third and fourth battle in the opening round.

It won’t be easy for the Cubs this weekend, with back-to-back games against the top two teams in the division. They play the Cochrane Generals this Saturday at Bow Island Arena (7:45 p.m) then wrap up the regular season in Okotoks (1:15 p.m.).

If Strathmore wins at least one of their final three games, the Cubs will have to win both games to take fifth place in the south.
