Man sentenced to one year in jail for attack on New Brunswick school

MONCTON, N.B. — A 36-year-old New Brunswick man has been sentenced to a year in jail for ramming his car into a school and threatening to kill the staff and students.

Mathieu Carroll was ordered to serve 365 days in jail, minus time served, in Moncton provincial court Thursday.

He pleaded guilty last month to multiple charges, including uttering death threats and causing more than $5,000 in damages to École Calixte-F.-Savoie in Sainte-Anne-de-Kent, N.B.

The judge accepted the joint Crown-defence sentencing recommendation, and also ordered Carroll to serve two years’ probation.

Carroll, who reportedly had methamphetamine in his system, targeted the school after domestic issues with his then-girlfriend.

His attack on Sept. 19, 2017, left the children and school staff under terrified lockdown.

The youngest played hide and seek under their teacher’s desk, while older students prayed and asked if they were going to die, and a petrified principal feared the worst in a locked basement.

“With time served, he could be out in a few months,” principal Chantal DesRoches said in an interview earlier this week.

“We’re all going to be looking over our shoulders.”

Carroll apologized in a Moncton courtroom last month, taking full responsibility for his actions in a letter read by his lawyer.
