Naloxone kits to be provided to Toronto high schools, TDSB says

TORONTO — Canada’s largest school board will soon be stocking all its high schools with the overdose-reversing drug naloxone.

Toronto District School Board spokesman Ryan Bird says naloxone kits will be provided to more than 100 secondary schools across the city once training is completed at the end of April.

Before the March Break, Bird says the board will begin training two to three staff members at each school on how to properly spot an overdose and administer the antidote.

He says the board isn’t aware of any opioid overdose deaths at city schools, but says the measure is a preventive one.

Bird says the board is covering the cost of each naloxone kit, which he says are between $150 and $200.

Meanwhile, all high schools that are part of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board are equipped with naloxone. Spokeswoman Sharlene Hunter says school staff were trained by Ottawa Public Health in August.
