Twin brothers making waves in swimming competitions

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A pair of Medicine Hat twins are making a splash with the Alberta Marlins Aquatic Club this season.

Parker and Munro Maxwell, 13, are both new to the Alberta Marlins Athletic Club, graduating from the youth swimming program in 2017.

The brothers are both making waves in the provincial ranks and have championship times among the best in Alberta. Parker specializes in butterfly events, while Munro is strong in freestyle races.

The two don’t agree on who the best swimmer is, but they believe their best competition is each other.

“We always race, we’re super competitive,” said Munro. “My better stroke would be freestyle, while his better stroke would be butterfly, but we’re both pretty good at each other’s strokes. So, when I’m racing him in a freestyle event, I absolutely do not want him to win.”

“When we do 200 metre freestyle beside each other, which is eight lengths of the pool, there’s always me right there wanting to beat him, and he’s always going faster than me, not wanting me to pass him,” said Parker, noting there is a “friendly competition,” even in practice, over who can race faster.

AMAC head coach Jordan Harper took the Maxwell’s under his wing earlier this season, and has seen their improvement.

He says the best practice for the two is to put them in the same pool.

“It doesn’t matter what meet we go to, if it’s provincials or an invitational, whatever it’s going to be, they always end up against each other,” he said.

The Maxwells will be heading to the Pronghorn Classic Swim Meet in Lethbridge in March, a long track event that Harper says will help prepare them for the spring season.
