Potential policy changes for how orphaned bears are rehabilitated in Alberta

CALGARY, AB. – Alberta is looking at changing its policy on rehabilitating orphaned bears.

Under the current policy, any bear cub that has been orphaned can’t be rescued.

But a fight to save an injured black bear near Springbank has prompted the province to study the problem.

Alberta Environment and Parks says it is working with some private wildlife facilities to come up with ideas before the spring bear hunt.

Last spring three black bear cubs were found locked in a bathroom in Banff National Park.

The case sparked confusion as officials in British Columbia, Alberta and Parks Canada tried to find a temporary home for the bears.
