Redcliff mom gets grocery shopping spree

MEDICINE HAT – Meals for Moms and South Country Co-op partnered to give one local mom a two minute shopping spree on Wednesday morning.

Meals for Moms is a charity that was started locally by founder Kara Danroth, four years ago. The group of volunteers delivers meals to new moms in the Medicine Hat area.

“When a mom has a baby in Medicine Hat, Dunmore, Redcliff, we are able to provide them with three meals at no cost to every family, if they access our program,” explained Danroth.

In the last three years the organization has partnered with South Country Co-op to provide a grocery shopping spree for one of many deserving moms.

“For Co-op if it’s local and it’s meaningful, then it matters to us,” said Carmen Hudson, communications manager for South Country Co-op.

This year Meals for Moms chose Sara Atwell. Atwell and her husband have five children ranging in age from three months to eight years old, so groceries are a huge expense.

“About every two weeks we pay $500 to $600, in a month we probably spend $1,200 on groceries,” said Atwell.

Atwell was able to take home $349.33 worth of groceries and other essentials following the event.

Danroth said the young mom was one of many who were nominated for the grocery shopping spree.

“[Those who nominated her] just said what a great mom she is, and how giving she is to all those around her,” said Danroth. “We really just wanted to give back to a mom like that.”

“I buy groceries every week too, I know that cost and for someone to step in and say ‘no, we’re going to cover this month for you’, it just is such a relief.”

Atwell said she and her family were excited and grateful to be selected for the grocery give away.

“It means that we don’t have to cover that part and we can spend it on other things that we need,” she said. “I wish every mom could experience this.”
