City keeping up with snow removal, though one councillor says changes could be made

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The City of Medicine Hat says they’ve been able to keep up with snow removal this season, but one city councillor says certain practices need to be looked at.

With the city receiving a major snowfall this weekend, workers with municipal works have been out clearing snow since Sunday morning. The crews have been focusing on major roadways in the city, and hills when removing snow.

Councillor Phil Turnbull says the cleaning of residential streets is one area which could be looked at in budget talks, though it all depends if the city has money to spare.

“I’d like to see if we could afford…or if we could find the money someplace, to do a little bit better job on some of the residential areas, especially for those who live in courts that flow downwards,” he said. “Because, when it melts, all that ice goes to the bottom, and makes it difficult.

“Again, it does come with a cost, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be looking at it, that we shouldn’t be studying it, and shouldn’t be trying to do a better job of everything we do in our city.”

Turnbull notes this winter has been unusual, as there hasn’t been many chinooks blowing in to help melt snow. He adds residential snow and ice removal concerns were one of the concerns brought up at his townhall meeting.

Jeremy Petryshyn, manager of operations for the city’s municipal works department, says the city examines their snow removal and their methods.

“We’re always looking at our operation, and looking for efficiencies where we can improve our service,” he said.

Currently, the city uses sand and a gravel salt mixture to remove ice from roads
