MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Monsignor McCoy High School Colts are on a hot streak to begin their basketball season.

The senior varsity squad currently sits with a 7-1 league record, and are second in the South Zone behind only Brooks.

B.J. Melle, head coach of the Colts, says his team is not the biggest or the fastest team he’s coached, but their talent blends well, which has resulted in the strong play this season.

“We lost seven Grade 12’s last year, we had a lot of size last year,” he said. “We had lots of guys, who were 6’2”, 6’3”, 6’4”. This year we have one kid that’s six feet, and a bunch of smaller kids that are pretty athletic, fundamentally sound and really nice kids and they work hard.”

The hard work has paid off in spades for the Colts, who have scored a league high 662 points in seven games, and have earned them an honourable mention in the ASAA provincial top ten rankings.

“I should have never underestimated them,” said Melle. “They’ve been working hard for me. Some of the kids, – I have four Grade 12’s – they’ve been working hard for three years, so I should’ve expected us to do well this year, but they’ve really surpassed my expectations.”

Spencer Tudor, one of the Grade 12 players on the team, leads the Colts with an average of 17.8 points per game.

Tudor, who hopes to play for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns of the CIS next season, says confidence is high all around the dressing room.

“Definitely, it’s higher than last year,” he said. “I remember last year, we were pretty low, but I think we’ll be coming back this year to provincials.”

The Colts, along with the Crescent Heights High School Vikings, will host the Super South Tournament beginning next Thursday, with many of the top high school teams in the province taking part.
