Police Commission welcomes new members

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Commission welcomed three new members Thursday night.

Terry Meidinger, Ted Rodych and Mandi Campbell were appointed last month.

In 2017, the commission went to council with a recommendation to add two members. For years the commission was made up of five people, including two city councillors.

Rolf Traichel completed his term, which left a third position open.

Council voted and approve the recommendation last September.

“They really are representing the community and to have seven members sitting there, five of which are just citizens at large, it’s really good,” said Chief Andy McGrogan. “This is an important time because we’re going through this whole ‘what are we going to be for the next four years’, ‘what does the community want us to look like over the next four years’ and to get that input from basically seven members rather than five, I think, is extremely valuable.”

“It’s going to help have a greater level of input to our meetings,” said chair Greg Keen. “It’s a better reflection of our community that’s represented and so I think it’s a significant change for us as a commission and for the service and for our city.”
