RALSTON, AB — A Ralston teacher has received a high honour from the British government for her work with education.

Sonia Stanton, a kindergarten teacher at Ralston School, has been awarded the British Empire Medal, the Prairie Rose School Division announced on Wednesday. The medal is granted to recognize meritorious civil or military service, and was announced in the London Gazette

“What a great honour,” says Stanton in a news release. “It is lovely that others have recognized my work and I am excited to share the award with my colleagues at Ralston School, who also do a fantastic job at supporting all our students including both British and Canadian Service children.”

Stanton has been working in the Prairie Rose School Division for 11 years as both a kindergarten teacher and the British liaison with Ralston School. As part of her role, she provides support to British military families who work at BATUS, helping them transition to Canada and a new education system.

Stanton’s name was announced as part of the New Year 2018 Honours List, which lists residents receiving knighthood and other official honours in the year. The list was also published in the London Gazette.

Stanton will be recognized locally, and has also been invited to Buckingham Palace to attend a garden party with Queen Elizabeth II.
