Couple giving away free truck on Facebook to someone in need

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Mike Muminovic and his wife Amra are being flooded with messages following an act of generosity online.

After one year of owning a 2002 Toyota Tundra pickup truck, the couple is giving the vehicle away for free on Facebook to a deserving person or family.

“We just put the truck here for sale for a couple days or whatever,” said Muminovic. “Just talked to the wife and just figured we might as well give it away for free, because we don’t really need the money and we already have a couple of vehicles.”

According to Muminovic, the truck has a few dents and scrapes but still runs fine, installing a new battery, and is set to have a mechanic fully inspect the vehicle.

After an outpouring of requests online, the pair closed the application process as they sift through the messages.

The couple has received over 500 emails and hundreds of messages on Facebook from locals, asking about the truck or recommending someone in need.

And, many of the stories have greatly touched Mike and Amra.

“A few people with cancer, single moms, people that have just been robbed, and there’s definitely some sad stuff,” he said. “It just sucks, because we have to narrow it down to one.”

They’re struggles that the pair knows well, moving to Medicine Hat around 20 years ago from war-torn Bosnia.

“We came here with two suitcases, so we definitely know what it’s like to be in the gutter or whatever and struggle to make it,” he said. “So for us, we’re happy that we can give back to the community, to someone who needs it right?”

Reaction on Facebook has been highly complementary of couple, with some saying the world needs more people like the Muminovics, while others have pulled their initial requests after seeing other people in the thread that “need it more.”

Though, some are concerned the act of kindness could be taken advantage of by someone just wanting a free truck, something that Muminovic has thought of.

“I think we’re just going to go with our gut instinct and kind of just check it out,” he said. “Don’t really want to make a mistake and kind of give it to someone who doesn’t need it or whatever, but at the same time we’re kind of new at this whole process too.”

An anonymous member of the community is also pitching in, offering to pay a year’s worth of insurance on the truck to whoever is chosen.

It’s these charitable acts that Muminovic said makes life worthwhile.

“It doesn’t hurt us or anything, because at the end of the day we’re all going to get buried six feet under anyways,” he said. “Nobody is taking nothing with us, so I mean why not try to help and try to make our community stronger, you know what I mean?”

Muminovic added he and his wife will likely sit down and choose a recipient of the truck on Wednesday.
