MEDICINE HAT, AB – Casey Scheidegger and her rink will play for an Alberta curling championship on Sunday after upsetting the previously undefeated Chelsea Carey rink at the 2018 Alberta Scotties.

Scheidegger and Carey squared off in a wild 1 vs. 2 playoff game on Saturday night, with the winner advancing to Sunday’s championship final.

Carey and her rink were rolling to start, picking up singles over the first three ends to take a 3-0 lead over Scheidegger.

Down by a 4-1 score entering the sixth end, Scheidegger score a trio of points to tie the game at 4-4 and give her team some life.

The following end, Scheidegger stole a pair of points to jump into the lead for the first time 6-4, but Carey responded in a big way in the ninth end with three point.

Trailing 7-6 and down to her final shot of the tenth end, Scheidegger was able to grab a pair of points to complete the comeback and advance to the finals with an 8-7 victory.

That means Carey will face the Shannon Kleibrink rink in the semi-finals on Sunday, with the winner of that contest facing Scheidegger in the championship match.

Kleibrink took to the ice against Val Sweeting on Saturday night as well in the 3 vs. 4 playoff tilt.

The defending champ and her rink scored a pair in the second end to go up 2-0 on Sweeting, but the Edmonton-based Sweeting rink posted a single in the third to cut the deficit in half.

The fourth end served as a turning point for Kleibrink, racking up four points on the Sweeting rink to hold a commanding 6-1 lead.

Kleibrink scored a pair of points in the seventh end to increase her lead to 8-2, with both teams exchanging handshakes at that point.

Sunday’s championship final will be held at the Medicine Hat Curling Club at 4:30 pm, as Scheidegger and either Carey or Kleibrink will be battling for a spot at the 2018 Scotties Tournament of Hearts national championship.
