31 Albertans have died from influenza this season: AHS

MEDICINE HAT, AB — There have been no new influenza deaths in the South Zone, according to new numbers from Alberta Health Services.

AHS released its first flu report since Dec. 21 on Thursday, revealing that 31 Albertans have died from lab confirmed cases of the disease since the season began in October. The total is up from 19 in the December report.

The South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge, has only reported two deaths so far this season, and there has been no change in the newest report.

Of those deaths 16 have been reported in Calgary, up from 12 in the last report.

Edmonton now has 10 confirmed influenza deaths, which is an increase from four in December.

The Central Zone reported its first two deaths of the season in the latest report.

Only one death has been reported in the North Zone all season.

Lab analysis has confirmed 4,312 cases of influenza A and 1,455 cases of influenza b in the province this year. A total of 1,570 in Alberta have been hospitalized with lab confirmed cases this season, with 762 of those cases in Calgary.

In the South Zone, 113 people have been hospitalized.

AHS says more than 1.1 million doses of the influenza vaccine have been administered this season in the province.
