MEDICINE HAT, AB — Professional wrestling is returning to the Gas City once again.
Canadian Wrestling’s Elite (CWE) makes another stop in Medicine Hat tonight at the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Wildrose Room, part of its Pick Your Poison Tour. It’s the latest stop for the Winnipeg-based promotion's 21-day straight tour.
“This tour has been ground-breaking and record-setting on every level,” said tour organizer Danny Warren. “We’ve been going on tour now for 19 years, and I can say without sertainty this has been our most successful tour to date.
“Every single date on this tour has been a packed house in every province we visited. We’re very excited about the growth of CWE going into 2018, and we’re really excited to come to Medicine Hat to see if we can keep the streak alive.”
Warren says one of the big reasons the tour has been successful has been the addition of WWE Hall of Famer and pro wrestling legend Jake “The Snake” Roberts for this tour. Roberts will be in the corner of local wrestler Deryck Crosse and Lethbridge grappler Sydney Steele as they battle The Cannon Clan (“The Crazed Cowboy” Jacob Creed & “The Rebel” Bobby Collins), for the CWE Tag Team Championship.
“Just the response he’s gotten at a lot of the events, the lineup every night of people wanting to meet him, get their picture with him and talk old wrestling stories with him is definitely a big part of it,” he said.
Warren adds, on a smaller level, it feels like professional wrestling is “cool” again, which is resulting in successful cards for CWE.
“People are excited to go to a professional wrestling event,” he said. “WWE doesn’t own the market anymore, people are watching all brands of professional wrestling now, from New Japan Pro Wrestling to Ring of Honor to independent wrestling from around the world. It’s cool to be a wrestling fan again, and we’ll bring some top-tier wrestlers from all around North America right to these cities, and people are coming out and supporting it.”
Warren says fans in attendance should expect one thing.
“To have a good time,” he said. “That’s exactly what professional wrestling is. It’s about having fun. That’s a big part of why I think wrestling’s had a bit of a resurgence over the last little while. It’s not the industry it used to be, where we tried to pull the wool over people’s eyes over what it was, like they did in the ‘70s and ‘80s. It’s accepted as a form of entertainment now.
“If you can accept it as a form of entertainment, you can come in, suspend your disbelief and have all kinds of fun.
Tickets are $20 at the door. The show gets underway at 7 p.m.
